Wood County Courthouse

What a cool experience we had today! We had great tour guides and great questions from students. The Wood County Courthouse was constructed in the 1890s and loomed then as an inpressive spector in the the booming Great Black Swamp town of Bowling Green. The Courthouse was built with oil and gas boom money. Do you think it was worth the money invested in it? What was your impression of the building? What impressed you most?

The Oil and Gas boom~

Bowling Green is an amazing place. It was the center of much attention when it first began and really it is quite an interesting place. What amazed you most about the oil and gas boom here in NWO? What about the oil's effect on the environment? What it good or bad? Would you have liked to have been a gas or oil prospector? How did these booms improve or impoverish the people of NWO? You decide and tell us?

Would you have liked to have retired to this government run facility? Did you realized that the United States had poor farms? What did you think of the lunatic house?

The Last of the Mohicans

The movie The Last of the Mohicans is a powerful saga of the struggle to survive. We can use this movie to analyze what happened here in Northwest Ohio. What do you think about the alliances formed with the indigenous people and the different groups who where interested in this land? Did the indigenous people ever benefit from any of the treaties signed here in the Americas?

When comparing the forts, how were they similar? How were they different? What kind of artillery did the armies use? Did the movie help you understand what a fort at this time period may have been like? Would you have liked to have served in a fort of this magnitude? Remember tomorrow we meet in Lot A at 12:45. Don't forget to keep reading Ten Days in a Madhouse... :)

Fort Meigs

Today we had a marvelous day with our historic interpreter Gradey. We explored the war of 1812 and what it must have been like to have been a soldier during this period of time. Who wants hardtack???? It is amazing to think that men walked around in woolen uniforms in the winter and the summer. Could you imagine walking around all day in those kind of clothes? Could you imagine staying warm enough in the cruel cold Northwest Ohio winter in those clothes?

Would you have liked to have been a soldier in the fort at the time? What about the issue of the mud? Would it have been easy to have dealt with this?

Our interpreter, Gradey, did mention the abundance of fish and natural food resources available to the soldiers. Do you think the soldiers were fortune in this aspect of their lives as soldiers? What do you think would have been your favorite activity as a soldier at this time?

Remember to keep reading 10 Days in a Madhouse. You should be through chapter 12 by the end of the weekend. Don't forget your Bio-Poems and your Week Two Reflections are due on Monday, June 7th : ) Keep up the great work! ~Dorinda~

The Miami and Erie Canal

Hi gang!!! We sure had a lovely time despite the change of plans. What do you think it would have been like to travel for a week on this type of boat? Would you have liked to travel this way? Where would you have slept? Where would you have used the women or men's restroom?

What do you think the role of the canal boat system played in opening up the Great Black Swamp? What type of businesses would have benefited from the development of the canal system? What were, if any, the health benefits of the canal in this region? Finally, what was your favorite part about today's trip?
