Wow! What a spectacular day we had! We had a great time learning about the Great Black Swamp the environment which the park is trying to reconstruct. The trails and paths that we walked today took us through Oak Savanahs and wetland prairies. We saw toads and snakes...Could you imagine ever traveling through land like this with wagons as the first pioneers did when settling this area? Our guide gave us a lot of information. What information did you find most interesting? Was there anything you didn't understand? Was there anything you didn't like? All in All, it was a good experience, and our guide was so kind as to give us cold water at the end of the hot walk! What do you think?

Wintergarden Park, which covers an area of approximately 120 acres, is in the southwest part of Bowling Green. The tour guide there is very friendly. It is really hard for me to believe that the whole Bowling Green City used to be a great black swamp and threatened by diseases.
ReplyDeleteActually I noticed the huge ditch along the highway when I arrived in the city. However, I did not figured out that those ditches are utilized for removing water from swamps. As the water level stays around 10 to 20 centimeters all year round (named as vernal pond), too many mosquitoes always harass those developers of this land, where Indians choose to dismiss. The small bloodsucker can be very dangerous because they can be infectious, which means it spreads bacteria and parasite eggs. As a result, all of the people shares same symptoms. The guess of how do these diseases happen is quite interesting: It is believed that people killed all of the “Passenger Pigeon” and hang them near the window. Then the shadow of the pigeon can boil the water, which is called pigeon soup, which emits a kind of poisonous fog, or miasma that make people sick or even die. You may see these stories quite objective, however, it expressed how poor the environment used to be.
There are many forts in the United States after the revolution, when there is a 200 anniversary, the English leave the land brought a lot of sailors on British ship. During the period, nobody want to be sailors because of unreasonable beating, whipping and other cruel treatment on the ship. There are sailors on one boat that held a revolution and sent the captain away. After 2000 miles travel, the captain came back with many boats and have them killed. I am not sure what this story is all about. Still, I can see that the history here is full of battle and struggling.
I am glad to receive the very slight gift of the nature, cotton wood seed, Interestingly, despite of its fluffy appearance, those seeds can become diligence-required housework. As the municipal did not take much attention, there used to be a lot of “junk areas” with old bushes. The area well managed is kept with regulated plants, such as a kind of violate flower. Smashing different leaves can be interesting, we can get spicy or garlic smell from the juice come out of the leaves.
There is a kind of plant named as horse tail in the zone, it has fake leaves and fake root. It is similar to fern but actually not. The age of it can be very old because it can be found in fossils. Everything here are struggling for certain resources. There is certain plant grew up by hanging around other large tree for better exposure to the Sun. When trees dead, they will decomposes and offer nutrients for fungus and even in earth. Animals here can well settle down because we can see squirrels, snakes moving. It is said that there are 4 to 5 deers and a fox nestle with 6 baby foxes here. It is really amazing how they changed the great swamp to be the great place of interest.
