Today we had a marvelous day with our historic interpreter Gradey. We explored the war of 1812 and what it must have been like to have been a soldier during this period of time. Who wants hardtack???? It is amazing to think that men walked around in woolen uniforms in the winter and the summer. Could you imagine walking around all day in those kind of clothes? Could you imagine staying warm enough in the cruel cold Northwest Ohio winter in those clothes?
Would you have liked to have been a soldier in the fort at the time? What about the issue of the mud? Would it have been easy to have dealt with this?
Our interpreter, Gradey, did mention the abundance of fish and natural food resources available to the soldiers. Do you think the soldiers were fortune in this aspect of their lives as soldiers? What do you think would have been your favorite activity as a soldier at this time?
Remember to keep reading 10 Days in a Madhouse. You should be through chapter 12 by the end of the weekend. Don't forget your Bio-Poems and your Week Two Reflections are due on Monday, June 7th : ) Keep up the great work! ~Dorinda~

ReplyDeleteIn 1813, Fort Meigs became the focal point of the War of 1812. Here, the British suffered their first setback of the Northwest Campaign when a detachment of American troops stood against the combined forces of British and Canadian soldiers and Tecumseh’s warriors.
The site’s Museum & Education Center and several blockhouses feature exhibits that engage visitors in the history of the fort. A National Historic Landmark, the 10-acre fort is North America’s largest restored stockade fortification.
Inside the stockade wall vistitors encounter blockhouses, artillery batteries, a quartermaster’s building and numerous interior traverses used by troops in defending the fort.
The war in the West had gone poorly for the United States. In August 1812, Gen. William Hull surrendered Detroit and his entire army to the British. On January 22, 1813, a second United States army led by James Winchester was defeated at French Town (present-day Monroe, Michigan) as it attempted to make its way to reclaim Detroit for the United States.
Americans have Navy, they can communicate and trade with the other guy. France, did not have a navy at the time, so they could not do too much about it, but Great Britain has a navy army, It was the largest navy at the time, and all they knew is stop our merchant ships. They are trying to board them to see where these goods are going. If they are going to England, it would be OK. If they are going to France, it would be a little bit different story. So they boards the ship, take the goods off the ship. That’s one of the reasons the U.S. states declare war against Great Britain. The longing for free trade. Cause we want the trade neutral in this world. Another thing that made us unhappy is: when they board our ships, they also take the sailors off as well (on the royal ships). That’s the second reason why we declare war. Out here, there’s going a long time about who’s going to control this land, in OHIO. OHIO was a state and INDIANA (Michigan) was just a territory at the time, it was far west in the united states. Indians are trying to settle here, and they are attacking the American settlers. We blame the Britain to tell Indians attacking American settlers. We finally declared the war on June 18th 18:20.
Wow you have a wonderful amount of information here Jason! I am glad to see that you paid such closs attention. So did you enjoy the day? Would you have liked to have been a soldier at the fort?
ReplyDeleteActually I recorded the introduction on my IPHONE,and I rearranged those information. I really enjoyed that day. I really appreciate the solider tour guide's enthusiasm of his work. It was really sweltering that day that he kept on mopping.... I'm not a patriot, however, I'd like to fight for freedom. Personally speaking, everything tough happens during war. Sometimes we can't find a WC and even can not get water. That is something really torturing people.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you were able to record this information on your iPhone. It was a sweltering day and yes, Gradey really maintained a great attitude. He seems to really enjoy what he does. I always learn something everytime I go to the fort. I never tire of history...Yes war can be terrible for everyone. I cannot even imagine the horrors of war. The men who suffered at Fort Meigs did so at great expense, but they openned up a whole new territory that opened a new space for new hopes and dreams of a people that had little, but just that...
