The Wood County Museum

Hi Gang! Another really cool day exploring Northwest Ohio History!!! The museum is such an exceptional Place. We have had yet another enlightening experience right here in Wood County! Our brains are filled with lots of information! Would you have liked to have lived here in the home for the mental ill or been here as part of the poor farm? Would you have liked to have retired to this government run facility? Did you realized that the United States had poor farms? What did you think of the lunatic house?

Aside from all of this, what was your favorite part of this field trip? What did you learn from this experience?

  1. I've seen the post! I'm responding to the post! The narrow lunatic room really made me desperate. I cannot get any hope from the limited space. However, the tour, whose name is Michael, was really helpful. I admire his broad knowledge of the life in those times. It was also interesting that even in 1940, the facilities were so advanced that all needs of people can be satisfied within the small area of the county house. It's funny to hear that someone get married in the herb garden before the butchery. The fact also reminded me that OHIO HISTORY is still very important nowadays.

  5. We watched a great movie today. The movie showed the development of OHIO. People used to dig holes for coal mine; however, they found a kind of strange fluid, which can burn when heated. They played with it, never had imagined that this special substance contains the power of changing the world. The situation changed until 1802, there were people found the prospect of getting in oil business. Things were changing very slow, until 1830, people started to accumulate petroleum and burn them to get the heat and light. However, petroleum was so flammable that it burned everycorner of the small city. When people started to use it, they did not refine crude oil carefully, the fire cannot meet the need of enough oxygen. As a result, the fire was not bright and oil burns out quickly. Men were exploring for more energies. Once a man accidently fell down on the wet mud. When he got up from the mud, instead of cursing his bad luck, he found that one of his fingers inserted deep into the earth. Maybe he's the first one who developed the geological theory of petroleum engineering. Developers found that the well has very heavy pressure underneath. Once the well was opened, there were gas and liquid shoot out of the ground, even as high as seven feets. The reason for this is: after fracture of the continent moved, the pressure of earth crushed the dead animal body. When it turned into liquid(crude oil), more and more gas(natural gas)accumulated above the area, and the salt sea water went into the narrow area. When a force suddenly break the balance, the pressure will force the natural gas out. Then people developed their own life on the bases of large amount of crude oil. One amazing number is: every well can drain 10'000 barrels petroleum a day. No wonder Fintly is still one of the richest areas in OHIO. That's all.
